The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars lost to the Northern Nash Knights back in December of 2019, but the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars didn't allow the Northern Nash Knights the same satisfaction on Thursday. SouthWest Edgecombe walked away with a 50-40 win over Northern Nash. Given SouthWest Edgecombe's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 151st, while Northern Nash is ranked 367th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
SouthWest Edgecombe's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Moore Mackenzie led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and 18 rebounds. Those 18 rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. K'Deidra (KD) Collins was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
SouthWest Edgecombe pushed their record up to 5-2 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.5 points per game. As for Northern Nash, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. SouthWest Edgecombe will finish 2023 at home by hosting Southeast Halifax at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Northern Nash will finish 2023 at home by hosting Vance County at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Vance County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matches -- so hopefully Northern Nash likes a good challenge.
