Class 5A No. 5 Bishop Carroll 49, Class 6A No. 4 Wichita East 19
Blake Bell led Bishop Carroll to a 42-6 lead at intermission by throwing for 220 yards before halftime in a 49-19 win over Wichita City League rival Wichita East Friday. For the game, Bell completed 19 of 35 passes for 261 yards and an interception to go along with three touchdowns passing and three more rushing. While the Aces were being shut down on their first eight possessions, Carroll scored on six drives of its own to build the lead. Bryce Brown, who has verbally committed to Miami (Fla.), rushed for 228 yards on 25 carries and touchdown runs of 69, 80 and 13 yards, for Wichita East, after gaining just 26 yards on his first 11 carries.
Class 6A No. 5 Junction City 21, Class 4A No. 1 Topeka Hayden 14
Topeka Hayden came within 2:45 of avenging its only regular season loss of a year ago. But Junction City, the fifth-ranked team in Kansas’ big class ranks, rallied from a 14-13 deficit to pull off a 21-14 triumph when Nathan Kozlowski’s 10-yard run capped an 8 play, 59-yard drive late in the fourth quarter. Cortez Delaney sealed the win when he intercepted Topeka Hayden quarterback T.J. McGreevy’s third down pass at the Wildcat 24. McGreevy completed just 9 of 26 passes for 106 yards and was credited with 2 interceptions. His counterpart for Junction City, Ty Zimmerman connected on 13 of 24 aerials for 128 yards and a touchdown. Zimmerman also rushed for 156 yards on 18 carries and a score.
Class 4A No. 5 Andover Central 28, Class 4A No. 2 Buhler 14
Keaton LaBanca was the recipient of a big push up front Friday as Andover Central doubled the score on Buhler 28-14. LaBanca carried the ball 28 times for 225 yards and touchdown runs of 5 and 70 yards. In all, the Jaguars rushed for over 300 yards. Andover Central took a 14-0 lead at halftime after LaBanca’s 5-yard run and a 9-yard scoring strike from quarterback Cole Blair. Buhler drove to the Jaguar 6 yard line on its first possession but turned the ball over on downs.
Class 4A No. 9 Andale 33, Class 4A No. 4 Rose Hill 7
Defending 4A champion Andale set the tone in this match up by running the ball 17 straight times on its first possession to take a 6-0 lead over the fourth-ranked Rockets on Corey Harp’s 2-yard run. Before halftime the Indians would build a 27-0 advantage after scoring three second quarter touchdowns. Andale rushed for 236 yards, while holding Rose Hill to a mere 107 yards of total offense. Rose Hill’s lone score came on Luke Haider’s 20-yard fumble return.
Class 3A No. 1 Silver Lake 36, Class 2-1A No. 4 St. Marys 14
Silver Lake coach C.J. Hamilton was treated to his 300th career win with a big play 36-14 victory over rival St. Marys. Eagle quarterback Tyler Roberts broke a 0-0 tie after a quarter of play by hooking up with Derek Bledsoe on a 65-yard score and Dustin Campbell on a 69-yard scoring strike. In the third quarter, the Eagles went up 21-0 on Roberts 64-yard scoring toss to Quin Bruce. In all, Roberts passed for 233 yards on just six completions. Eagle running back Cameron Renfro rushed for 151 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 39-yard romp. Gatlin Jacobsen scored on a 53-yard run for St. Marys in the third quarter. Brandon Tyler scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Bears.
Class 2-1A No. 1 Smith Center 40, Class 2-1A No. 5 Ellis 0
Trevor Rempe led a strong Smith Center rushing attack by racking up 145 yards on 16 carries, including a 72-yard scoring run, in a 40-0 win over Ellis. The Redmen racked up 405 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 51 carries in the shut out. Ellis, meanwhile, was held to 135 yards of total offense during their first loss of the season. Smith Center’s winning streak climbed to 59 with the win.
