Karns City and Redbank Valley are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Gremlins will welcome the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Karns City 4.1, Redbank Valley 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Karns City is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Cranberry Area just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Berries by a score of 7-6.
Koen Williams was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Another player making a difference was Mason Sherwin, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Redbank Valley entered their tilt with Keystone on Wednesday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 13-2 victory. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Bulldogs considering their two-run performance the game before.
Jaxon Huffman made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Carson Gould was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double. He has become a key player for Redbank Valley: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Braylon Wagner, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base.
Redbank Valley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Redbank Valley's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-8. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Karns City, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Karns City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Redbank Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Karns City's way against Redbank Valley in their previous matchup back in April, as Karns City made off with a 9-2 win. Will the Gremlins repeat their success, or do the Bulldogs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
