The Huntingtown Hurricanes will venture away from home to face off against the Lackey Chargers at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Huntingtown took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past North Point 60-58. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Hurricanes have posted since February 14, 2024.
Huntingtown's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Conner Lawrence, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven boards and six assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Nate Harris, who posted 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Huntingtown smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in December of 2024.
Meanwhile, Lackey had already won 11 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.1 points) and they went ahead and made it 12 on Monday. They had just enough and edged the Eagles out 51-49. The score was all tied up 23-23 at the break, but the Chargers were the better team in the second half.
Huntingtown better keep an eye on Malik Gordon. He was instrumental in Lackey's win, putting up 18 points and four steals. Gordon has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last four times he's played. Kweli Tillman was another key player, scoring eight points.
Huntingtown pushed their record up to 11-7 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.7 points over those games. As for Lackey, their record now sits at 18-2.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Huntingtown has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.7 boards per game. However, it's not like Lackey struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Huntingtown came up short against Lackey in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, falling 53-49. Can Huntingtown avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
