OMAHA, Neb. - A big 26-point first quarter helped carry the Thunderbirds to a 47-22 victory over
Benson (Omaha, Neb.) on Saturday.
Bellevue West scored on a defensive touchdown, a punt return touchdown by
CJ Johnson, a touchdown run by
Mike Gilbert and a
Malik Hluchoweckyj touchdown run in the quarter.
After taking the lead on a defensive touchdown in the first quarter, BW led 40-0 at the half.
The Bellevue school expanded its lead to 41 points entering the fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds' lone score in the quarter came on a
Ryan Plambeck touchdown run.
The Thunderbirds raced to 26 in the first quarter alone and never looked back.
Bellevue West's standout player in the win was
Brennan Cascio. He caught two touchdowns.
The defeat comes as a step back for Benson, who notched a 32-20 victory over Omaha Northwest in its previous outing. The win brought Bellevue West's winning streak to three games.
Benson (1-2) will play a non-conference game against Papillion-LaVista next week, while Bellevue West (3-0) will take on Papillion-LaVista South also in a non-conference game.
