Apollo is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will take on the Valley Vista Monsoon at 6:00 p.m. Apollo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Apollo's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. Everything went their way against Copper Canyon as Apollo made off with a 10-0 win. The Hawks haven't had any issues with the Aztecs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Rey Garcia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.
In other batting news, Apollo got a big performance out of Isaiah Mendoza, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. That's the most stolen bases Mendoza has posted since March 1st. Another player making a difference was Jesus Beltran, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Apollo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .680. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Valley Vista scored first but ultimately less than Highland in their contest on Friday. They came up short against the Hawks, falling 13-5. The Monsoon have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Valley Vista also got a good showing from Troy Morales, who tossed 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Morales has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Diego Munoz made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Adrian Montoya was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Apollo's record now sits at 10-4. As for Valley Vista, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Apollo has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Valley Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Apollo might still be hurting after the 13-2 loss they got from Valley Vista when the teams last played back in February of 2020. Can Apollo avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
