Woodland and Penobscot Valley are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Dragons will square off against the Howlers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Woodland knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past five matchups -- so hopefully Penobscot Valley likes a good challenge.
Woodland came out on top against Jonesport-Beals on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive eight-run first inning. The Dragons blew past the Royals 13-3. The Dragons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by eight runs or more this season.
Micah Chesebrough was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Chesebrough was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Isiah Nicholas was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Evan Monk, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Woodland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Penobscot Valley made easy work of Penquis Valley on Friday and carried off a 9-2 victory. The Howlers haven't had any issues with the Patriots recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Like Woodland, Penobscot Valley also got a great game from a two-way player: Max Hamel. On the mound, Hamel tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Scott Lane tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. At bat, Hamel went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run, while Lane got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cooper Lindquist, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. Chase Osgood was another key player, going 1-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs.
Woodland has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Penobscot Valley, the win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 2-6.
Woodland took their victory against Penobscot Valley when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 15-2 score. Will the Dragons repeat their success, or do the Howlers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
