Westwood is 0-8 against Centennial since December of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Westwood Panthers will head out on the road to face off against the Centennial Eagles at 6:00 p.m. Westwood will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 390th, while Centennial is ranked 49th).
Last Wednesday, Westwood had to suffer through a rough 74-37 loss at the hands of Martin County. Westwood has struggled against Martin County recently, as their contest on Wednesday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
The losing side was boosted by Jihla Greer, who scored 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazmyne Jones, who scored three points.
Meanwhile, Centennial waltzed into their game Wednesday with four straight wins but they left with five. They snuck past Vero Beach with a 44-39 win. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 19 to 7 on the offensive boards, as Centennial did.
Centennial's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jailyn Williams led the charge by dropping a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds. The matchup was Williams' sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jakenzye McBride, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds.
Westwood's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Centennial, their victory was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Westwood have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 19.2 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Centennial, though, as they've been averaging only 31.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Westwood was dealt a bruising 76-13 loss at the hands of Centennial when the teams last played back in December of 2022. The contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Westwood was down 58-5.
