Jack Reed made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. He has become a key player for Battle Mountain: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-6 otherwise. Tony Damici also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Meanwhile, Coal Ridge made easy work of Basalt on Saturday and carried off a 10-2 victory. Considering the Titans have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Ben Simons made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Jakson Slade was incredible, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Julian Perez, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Coal Ridge was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .484. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in 11 consecutive matchups.
Coal Ridge's win was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-2-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games. As for Battle Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 7-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Battle Mountain has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Coal Ridge struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Battle Mountain might still be hurting after the 11-5 defeat they got from Coal Ridge in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Can the Huskies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
