Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Gretna walked away with it. They won a game that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by the Norris Titans 46-45. This was a revenge game for the Dragons: when they faced off against the Titans back in September, they had to take a 52-35 loss.
Gretna's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Michael Knudsen, who threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in one score on the ground. Knudsen has become a key player for the Dragons: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least three passing touchdowns, but 1-3 otherwise. 92 of Knudsen's passing yards were hauled in by Bryce Lakers.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Gretna, adding 14 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Nathan Thiellen, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
When it comes to explaining why Norris lost on Friday, don't look at Markus Nelson. Despite the final result, he rushed for 288 yards and four TDs while picking up 9.9 yards per carry. Nelson showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 55 yards.
Gretna has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 44.2 points over those games. As for Norris, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-2.
Coming up, Gretna will host York at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Norris does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
