The Newington Nor'easters''s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their sixth straight loss. They and Middletown were almost perfectly matched up, but Newington suffered an agonizing 21-20 defeat. Newington lost against Middletown in their previous head to head back in October of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 54-49 score last time.
When it comes to explaining why Newington lost, one person who can't be blamed is Enzo Corvino. Despite the final result, he threw for 55 yards and three touchdowns. Leequon Benford was in the mix too, providing Newington with two touchdowns.
Middletown got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Zy'Kie Askew out in front who rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. Askew is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Josh Ferguson, who picked up 123 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Newington's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 1-6. As for Middletown, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-3.
Newington will be playing in front of their home fans against Berlin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Berlin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up four on Friday. Middletown is on the road again on Thursday and play against Bristol Central at 6:00 p.m. on November 2nd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Connecticut (Bristol Central is ranked 72nd, while Middletown is ranked 53rd).
