Baseball Recap: Walsingham Academy Takes Down Ranked St. Anne's-Belfield

Walsingham Academy faced St. Anne's-Belfield in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. Walsingham Academy had just enough and edged out St. Anne's-Belfield 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Trojans have posted since April 6, 2024.

Matthew Swanson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. Walsingham Academy is 2-0-1 when Swanson allowsone or fewer earned runs, but 1-2 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Walsingham Academy's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Daniel Guntherberg, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Guntherberg is becoming a predictor of Walsingham Academy's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 0-2-1 when he doesn't). Chandler Howlett also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Walsingham Academy is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-2-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. St. Anne's-Belfield's loss dropped their record down to 4-3.

Coming up, Walsingham Academy will face off against Miller School of Albemarle at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Miller School of Albemarle will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Walsingham Academy surely won't give up without a fight. As for St. Anne's-Belfield, they will square off against Bishop Ireton at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. St. Anne's-Belfield is facing Bishop Ireton at the right time seeing as Bishop Ireton is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
