The Lake Shore Shorians will face off against the Warren Woods-Tower Titans at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Lake Shore fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Grosse Pointe South on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Blue Devils by a score of 3-2.
Sophia VanDenstorm spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits and racked up 16 Ks.
On the hitting side, Makayla Blumenschein was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Warren Woods-Tower hadn't done well against Athens recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Titans blew past the Red Hawks 14-2. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Titans.
Payton Robinson made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. Robinson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. Robinson is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Atiana Guzman, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Eisa Lautenbach was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Warren Woods-Tower was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Athens only posted a batting average of .273.
Warren Woods-Tower pushed their record up to 2-1 with the win, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Lake Shore, they now have a losing record of 1-2.
Warren Woods-Tower's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Lake Shore has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 13.3 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Warren Woods-Tower, though, as they've been averaging only 2.3 strikeouts. Will Lake Shore keep running through batters, or will the Titans buck the trend?
