The Providence Pioneers will head out to face off against the Holy Cross Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
On Wednesday, Providence made easy work of Clarksville and carried off a 14-3 victory. The Pioneers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by ten runs or more this season.
Cole Huett was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Blake Straub also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Providence always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clarksville only posted an OBP of .357.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Holy Cross challenged W.E.B. DuBois Academy on Wednesday. The Cougars never let the Lions get on the board and left with a 13-0 win. The victory was nothing new for the Cougars as they're now sitting on three straight.
Ace Foley and Mason Lanham made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Foley struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Lanham tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Foley has become a key player for Holy Cross: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 5-12 otherwise. At the plate, Foley went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and two doubles, while Lanham got on base in two of his three plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, Noah Basham was a standout: he got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Holy Cross' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 5-12 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Avery Roy, who went 1-for-3 with four RBI, one triple, and one run.
Holy Cross pushed their record up to 8-13 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Providence, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-2.
Everything went Providence's way against Holy Cross in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Providence made off with a 10-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pioneers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
