Champion has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against the Garfield G-Men at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Champion focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Saturday.
Last Saturday, Champion came up short against John F. Kennedy Catholic and fell 65-52. The loss was Champion's first of the season.
Despite their loss, Champion saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Isabella Meyer, who scored 15 points along with 7 rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The contest was Meyer's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie Warzala, who scored 10 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals.
Meanwhile, Garfield also suffered a loss in their last game, but this one to Hubbard by a score of 43-35. Garfield has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite the defeat, Garfield saw an underclassman step up: Mandy Cardinal scored 14 points along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Cardinal scored a full 40% of Garfield's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Annie Rado, who scored 6 points.
Their wins bumped Champion to 3-1 and John F. Kennedy Catholic to 3-1.
Monday's contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Champion have been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 37% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Garfield struggles in that department as they've made 35% of theirs this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Champion was taken down by Garfield 52-19 in their previous meeting back in February. Can Champion avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
