Cairo-Durham is 1-9 against Taconic Hills since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Mustangs will head out to challenge the Titans at 4:30 p.m. Cairo-Durham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Cairo-Durham beat Catskill 8-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mustangs.
Jake Young made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 12 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Taconic Hills never let their opponents score on Monday. They blew past Germantown 13-0. The Titans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.
Like Cairo-Durham, Taconic Hills also got a great game from a two-way player: Hunter Nielsen. Throwing, Nielsen tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Maky Kirby didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over four innings pitched. At bat, Nielsen went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while Kirby went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Charlie Schrader was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and three runs. Another player making a difference was Jacob Alvarez, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Cairo-Durham's record is now 8-4. As for Taconic Hills, their record now sits at 10-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cairo-Durham has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Taconic Hills struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Cairo-Durham suffered a grim 6-0 defeat to Taconic Hills when the teams last played back in April. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
