This season hasn't been kind to the Wheeler County Bulldogs, who are still winless after their seventh contest. They were dealt a 61-19 defeat at the hands of East Laurens on Tuesday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Wheeler County in their matchups with East Laurens: they've now lost five in a row.
Despite the defeat, Wheeler County saw an underclassman step up: Justise Dubose scored seven points along with 13 rebounds and three steals. Dubose is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Wheeler County struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as East Laurens posted ten assists.
Leading East Laurens to victory were Jayla Givens and McKayela Tanner. Givens dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Tanner dropped a double-double on 26 points and 14 rebounds. The match was Tanner's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Deanna Lowther was another key contributor, scoring six points along with 17 rebounds and six steals.
Wheeler County's loss was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-7. As for East Laurens, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 5-2.
After both having extra time off, Wheeler County and Bacon County will shake off the cobwebs and face off against one another at 6:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Bacon County is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak. East Laurens will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Treutlen at 5:00 p.m. on December 30th.
