After a string of three wins, the Lee Volunteers's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of Churchill by a score of 60-57. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Lee has suffered yet this season.
Despite the defeat, Lee had strong showings from Rosanelly Pastrano, who scored 22 points along with two steals, and Debi Hernandez, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds. Hernandez is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilah Yanover, who scored seven points along with two steals.
Churchill's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rakiya Nelson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nelson is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Daphne Zuniga, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Lee's defeat dropped their record down to 17-10. As for Churchill, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 21-9 record this season.
Lee will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against SA Roosevelt at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th. SA Roosevelt has now lost 11 straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since November 18. As for Churchill, they will head out on the road to square off against Johnson at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Texas (Johnson is ranked 196th, while Churchill is ranked 174th).
