Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, the Covington-Douglas Wildcats couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They took a 58-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of Velma-Alma. Despite running the score up even higher than they did last Thursday (46), Covington-Douglas still had to take the loss.
When it comes to explaining why Covington-Douglas lost on Friday, one person who can't be blamed is Ford Smith. Despite the final result, he rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.5 yards per carry, and also threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Smith was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 50 yards.
Slade Strickland was on fire for Velma-Alma: he rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 232 yards and four touchdowns while completing 72.7% of his passes. Langsten Walker did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 98 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Covington-Douglas' loss dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Velma-Alma, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-1.
Covington-Douglas does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Velma-Alma will square off against Garber at TBD on Friday. Garber has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 152 points over their last three matchups.
