Baseball Recap: Taft Triumphs

Taft is still undefeated this season after their game against Newport on Thursday, but Newport came as close as anyone has to beating them. The Tigers narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Cubs 6-4. That's two games straight that the Tigers have won by exactly two runs.

Hayden Weiss and Zack Hankins were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Weiss pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Hankins tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Weiss has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, Weiss got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run, while Hankins went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Callen Ward, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Ethan Schaffner also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Taft's win bumped their record up to 6-0. As for Newport, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Taft will face off against Brookings-Harbor at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Newport, they will square off against Cottage Grove at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
