After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Ansonia, the Oxford Wolverines were happy to have found some success on Thursday. They came out on top against Derby by a score of 33-24. The high flying offensive effort was a huge turnaround for Oxford's zero-point performance the match before.
Matthew Mcguire was a one-man wrecking crew for Oxford as he rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry. Mcguire was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 60 yards.
Derby's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bryan Mclean, who rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.2 yards per carry. Mclean has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Titus, who picked up 159 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Oxford has yet to lose a match at home this season, leaving them with a 9-1 record. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 30.9 points per game. As for Derby, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-8.
Oxford will be playing in front of their home fans against Notre Dame Catholic at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few points on average, (Notre Dame Catholic: 13.9, Oxford: 13.4) so any points scored will be well earned. Derby does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
