Northwood is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Thursday. They will square off against the Irvine Vaqueros at 3:30 p.m. Northwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Monday as neither Northwood nor Trabuco Hills made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Timberwolves sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 win over the Mustangs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Timberwolves have posted since April 21, 2025.
Olivia Chen spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on five hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Katerinna Rizos, who went 1-for-2 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Jessie Wendt, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
El Toro hit Irvine with a five-run second inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Vaqueros came up short against the Chargers, falling 12-0. The Vaqueros have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Irvine saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Midori De Los Santos, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.
The win got Northwood back to even at 3-3-1. As for Irvine, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
Irvine's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Northwood hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .328. It's a different story for Irvine, though, as they've only averaged .250. Will they be able to contain Northwood's hitters?
Northwood couldn't quite get it done against Irvine when the teams last played back in April of 2025 as they fell 9-6. Can the Timberwolves avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
