The Clinton Prairie Gophers are taking a road trip to challenge the Eastern Comets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Clinton Prairie is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Clinton Prairie made easy work of Sheridan and carried off an 11-1 win. The victory continues a trend for the Gophers in their matchups with the Blackhawks: they've now won three in a row.
Maddy Wessell made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Wessell was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
In other batting news, Kadie Fearnow and Brenna Riley did most of the damage at the plate: Fearnow went 3-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base, while Riley got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. That's the most runs Fearnow has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Lily Coleman, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Eastern was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their 11th straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 15-6 to Rochester. Comets fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Zebras since on Monday.
Marly Coan was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one double. Elle Winger was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Clinton Prairie now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Eastern, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-10.
Clinton Prairie's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's matchup. The Gophers have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Eastern, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Clinton Prairie continue to outrun the ball?
Clinton Prairie came out on top in a nail-biter against Eastern in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 12-11. Do the Gophers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Comets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
