Winnebago and Oregon are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Indians will head out on the road to challenge the Hawks at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Winnebago has given up an average of 7.1 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Stillman Valley hit Winnebago with a five-run fifth inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Indians might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 12-2 to the Cardinals, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The defeat continues a trend for the Indians in their meetings with the Cardinals: they've now lost four in a row.
Kyla Warkentien made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.
Meanwhile, Oregon waltzed into their match on Monday with ten straight wins... but they left with 11. They never let the Raiders get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won 13 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Oregon also got a great performance from Emma Schlichtmann as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Schlichtmann has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Olivia Ortega was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Abree Barker was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Oregon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ashton-Franklin Center only posted a batting average of .062.
Oregon's win was their tenth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Winnebago, their loss dropped their record down to 8-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Winnebago has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Oregon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Winnebago suffered a grim 8-0 defeat to Oregon in their previous matchup on April 8th. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
