The Lawrence Central Bears will take on the Pike Red Devils in a tournament on Friday. The last three games Lawrence Central has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Things were looking good for Lawrence Central after they put the first run on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Kokomo by a score of 6-4.
Jayden Dorsey made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Solomon Rashid, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, while Pike put up some runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for Greenwood Christian Academy. The Red Devils blew past the Cougars 8-0. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won five matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.
Jimquell Young, Jr and Lincoln Sigmund made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Young, Jr pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Sigmund didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Pike is 4-2 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-4 otherwise. At the plate, Young, Jr got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run, while Sigmund went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave Young, Jr a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rory Weaver, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. He has become a key player for Pike: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-6 otherwise.
Lawrence Central has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-12 record this season. As for Pike, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 7-6 record.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Lawrence Central has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Pike struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Lawrence Central came out on top in a nail-biter against Pike when the teams last played back in April, sneaking past 8-6. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Red Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
