Wayland was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last match, but they sure didn't let that happen against Ionia on Tuesday. The Wildcats were the clear victors by an 11-5 margin over the Bulldogs. Considering the Wildcats have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Easton Williams made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since May 3rd.
In other pitching news, Gavin Mulder looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Wayland's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is undefeated (and 10-16 when he doesn't).
Back at the plate, Trent Sikkema was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base. That's the most runs he has posted since May 5th.
Wayland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ionia only managed six hits.
Wayland's record is now 13-16. As for Ionia, their loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wayland will take on Otsego at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Ionia, they will square off against Lansing Catholic at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
