GARDENA, Calif. -
Serra (Gardena, Calif.) grabbed the lead when they scored a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the fifth quarter and held on to upset
Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) 19-13 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured two lead swaps.
The Knights pulled ahead on a field goal by
Lucas Alfonso, and subsequently went into halftime leading 6-0. The Cavaliers took the lead for good with a touchdown in the fifth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Serra still trailed by six points going into the fourth quarter. But 13 points in the fourth helped SHS pull out the victory.
Jalen Greene stood out for the Gardena school in the win. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
Notre Dame's only touchdown came on a 60-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
The victory was a completely different match up compared to last season's game between these two teams, which Notre Dame took, 35-13.
The loss comes after Notre Dame defeated Del Oro 41-24 last week. The loss broke Notre Dame's two-game winning streak.
Serra (3-0) goes up against Dorsey in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Notre Dame (2-1) locks horns with Birmingham also in a non-conference game.
