Pekin and Canton are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Dragons will head out to square off against the Little Giants at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Pekin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Pekin didn't have quite enough to beat Metamora and fell 4-3. The Dragons haven't had much luck with the Redbirds recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Zoe Lindahl was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Lindahl was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run.
Lindahl wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kylea Siedell, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
While Canton didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Macomb with a sharp 7-0 win on Friday. Considering the Little Giants have won seven matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
The result came thanks to Lilliana Horton's shutout, as she gave up just four hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Allison Wheeler and Tori Birch did most of the damage at the plate: Wheeler went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base, while Birch went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Ella Renick also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.
Canton pushed their record up to 10-3 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for Pekin, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.
Pekin took their victory against Canton when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dragons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
