The Grand Island Islanders's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their sixth straight loss. They were beaten by Fremont 58-25. Grand Island was down 44-14 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.
Despite the loss, Grand Island saw an underclassman step up: Aysha Gawrych scored six points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilly Goodwin, who scored four points along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Fremont's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Matthea Dalton, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Dalton has scored all season. Jenna Mcclain was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Grand Island dropped their record down to 1-17 with that loss, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Fremont, their victory ended a 11-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-15.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Grand Island will take on Lincoln North Star at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. Grand Island comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last four games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. As for Fremont, they will be playing at home against Omaha South at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. Fremont is facing Omaha South at the right time seeing as Omaha South is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
