The biggest upset of the week belonged to Woodville, who took down 627th ranked Anahuac, 34-7.
Newton extended the longest winning streak in 2A-1 Region III District 10 this week by beating East Chambers, 74-7. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
Newton's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. D.J. DEAN threw for 174 and two touchdowns and RONEY ELAM had 67 yards receiving. On the ground DEAN chipped in 128 yards. KEVIN SHORTER helped Newton's passing attack out by catching one ball for 34 yards.
The Eagles' DEAN and SHORTER have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. DEAN has thrown for 451 yards this season, while SHORTER, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has five catches for 145 yards. The Panthers' Justin Artis leads the league in rushing yards with 1013.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Newton takes on second place Kountze. Last week, Newton defeated the Buccaneers, while Kountze beat Warren.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Lions take on the Eagles. Kountze has allowed 102 points this season, while Newton has given up 63. Tracey Franklin's team allowed 0 points last week as it defeated the Warriors.
The Eagles moved up to 565 from 763 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 2A-1 Region III District 10. Woodville was able to make the jump by topping Anahuac 34-7.
