The Hammond Skyhawks and the South Pointe Stallions will round out the year against one another at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Hammond comes in on three and South Pointe on seven.
Hammond scored the most points they've had all season to find success last Saturday. They blew past Hilton Head Prep 57-27 on the road.
Meanwhile, South Pointe was able to grind out a solid victory over Campbell on Friday, taking the game 58-47. Given South Pointe's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked fifth in South Carolina, while Campbell is ranked 77th in Georgia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
South Pointe's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but JaNyia Cunningham led the charge by scoring 18 points along with nine rebounds. Cunningham is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Victoria Morris, who scored 15 points along with nine rebounds.
Hammond now has a winning record of 3-2. As for South Pointe, their victory bumped their record up to 9-2.
Hammond couldn't quite finish off South Pointe in their previous meeting back in December of 2014 and fell 50-48. Can Hammond avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
