After years of dominating the southern New England prep school ranks, it took just a year for Moses Brown to capture the 2009 Division 1 RIIL state title, 10-5, over Bishop Hendricken.
Wesley Hardman and David Appolonia each had four goals for the Quakers (14-1). Senior captain and midfielder Ian Deveau, who finished the season with 44 goals and 37 assists, added two goals and an assist.
Deveau started the scoring just 1:22 into the contest and Appolonia increased the lead to 3-0 within a two-minute span bridging the first and second periods.
The Hawks did not capitalize on golden chances afterward, including a two-man up situation early in the second quarter. Quaker goalie Nicholas Capalbo also stood firm in the net coupled with the Hawks also hitting the post a few times.
Robert Flynn finally broke the Hawks scoring ice with a goal at 3:45 but the Rams countered with a goal from Hardman who scored on a short pass from attack Matt Hooper (three assists).
Midfielder Edward Pekalski responded again for the Hawks after scooping up a loose ball and firing it past Capalbo. But that would be the closest the No. 4 seed Hawks (7-8) would come as Appolonia and Hardman increased the Quakers lead to 6-2 at halftime.
Two more goals by Hardman and one each by Appolonia and Deveau completed the scoring for Moses Brown.
Midfielder Stuart Sheehan was held scoreless despite a season in which he had 30 goals and 30 assists.
To reach the finals, the No. 4 Hawks upset No. 2 seed La Salle, 14-12, on three goals each by Ross Ahlborg and Dan Sullivan and five assists by Pakalski.
"We just could not put the ball in the net today," said Hawks head coach Kevin Murray, who has guided the squad to eight state championship appearances and four state titles in nine years. "But give them credit. And the goalie was tough and we could not seize the opportunities when we had them."
"For so many years in the SENE or as an independent we knew we had very good teams for Rhode Island, but we were never recognized for it,” Quaker head coach Peter Sheehan said. "Today they put long sticks on our middies (leading scorers Deveau and son Stuart Sheehan) but as the season went on we became much more balanced to make it a more competitive team."
