Football Recap: Gothenburg Piles Up the Points Against Holdrege

Gothenburg won the last time they faced Holdrege and things went their way on Friday too. The Swedes really took it to the Dusters for the full four quarters, racking up a 48-6 victory. The game marked the Swedes' most dominant win of the season.

Evan Johnson produced another solid performance rushing for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only eight carries. Torren Wind helped out on the ground, rushing for 89 yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Gothenburg was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 295 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Holdrege only rushed for 182.

Gothenburg's defense stepped up as well, laying out Lucas Johnson four times. Jaxon Earll was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 5.3 total tackles per game. Gothenburg received some extra help from Axel Jorgenson, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Johnson and Deacon Burkey certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Johnson rushed for 62 yards and one TD on only five carries, while Burkey rushed for 83 yards on only nine carries.

The victory made it two in a row for Gothenburg and bumps their season record up to 6-1. The team dominated over those games too, winning by an average of 38.5 points. As for Holdrege, their loss was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-7.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Gothenburg is set to face off against their familiar foe Minden at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Johnson and Caleb Schwenka. Meanwhile, Holdrege will challenge rival Cozad at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
