The eighth-annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard made a stop at
McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) on Thursday, May 8 to recognize the school's state championship girls basketball team. The Indians finished with a 29-2 record, winning their second state championship in the last three years. They reeled off 26 consecutive victories on their way to the 6A Georgia state championship and finished 2014 ranked No. 10 in the nation out of more than 20,000 high school varsity girls basketball teams by MaxPreps.
The award presentation took place during the annual Senior Honors Night on the campus in the beautiful Performing Arts Center. Staff Sergeant Jonathan Boynton of the Georgia Army National Guard was on hand to visit with coaches and students, and to make the trophy presentation. Prior to the presentation, interviews were conducted with the coach and several key players, and pictures were taken of the entire team with Staff Sergeant Boynton.
Students, faculty and parents were present, as Principal Regina Montgomery shared opening remarks and the ROTC presented the colors for the national anthem. The first presentation of the evening was the MaxPreps Tour of Champions recognition. Dean Craig, the MaxPreps representative, shared the accomplishments of the team, the system MaxPreps uses to determine the team rankings for the Tour of Champions and how special it was for the Indians to be ranked No. 10 in the nation. Boynton then congratulated the team and reminded the audience of the team's success and how it matched the values of the Army National Guard. Boynton then presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy to coach Phyllis Arthur as the audience cheered with excitement. As the crowd cheered for its team, the players and coaches posed for a few pictures and were applauded as they exited the stage.
The Indians were very honored and appreciative to be recognized nationally by MaxPreps and the Army National Guard, and were grateful to be included in the Tour of Champions for their great season. They were thrilled to have been recognized two out of the last three years.
Congratulations McEachern on a great season and national ranking! Hope to see you next year on the Tour of Champions!
