Downriver recap November 5, 2013
Roosevelt extended the longest winning streak in Downriver this week by beating Lincoln, 45-40. This was the team's 10th consecutive win.
Melvindale scaled the state rankings by moving to 106 from 143 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Cardinals were able to move up by besting Riverview 34-17.
Roosevelt's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Donovan Stewart threw for 185 and 4 touchdowns and Brandon Sowards had 82 yards receiving. On the ground D'Aries Davis chipped in 234 yards. Donnie Corley helped Roosevelt's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 44 yards.
Davis provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Ron Adams' team bested the Railsplitters. Davis' key target this week was Sowards, who caught 4 passes for 82 yards.
Davis was a force in the backfield as the Bears beat Lincoln.
Sowards was the best receiver in the league this week as Roosevelt defeated Chris Westfall's team. Corley helped Roosevelt's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 44 yards.
Leading Downriver in both passing and receiving yards, the Bears' Stewart and Sowards have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Stewart has thrown for 1,464 yards this season, while Sowards has 36 catches for 972 yards. Christian Mercure from Trenton leads the league in rushing with 1,297 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Roosevelt takes on second place Truman. Roosevelt beat the Railsplitters last week, while Truman defeated Allen Park.
The Cougars' offense has racked up 456 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while the Bears have allowed only 131 on the year.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when Roosevelt's Sowards goes up against Truman's Quinn Wurmlinger.
The Bears' Sowards is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 28 receiving yards against Eric Stiegel's team to hit that benchmark. So far this year, he has acheived 36 catches for 972 yards.
The Cougars' Devonte McGregor needs only 99 yards against Roosevelt next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 115 carries McGregor has put up 901 yards this year.
Next week's game between the Bears and Truman will feature an aerial matchup as Stewart tests his arm against Wurmlinger's defensive ability.
There should be lots of points scored when Roosevelt and the Cougars face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Bears comes in having scored 454 this season, while Truman has scored 456. Roosevelt scored 45 points last week as it bested Lincoln.
The Cougars took down the Jaguars 36-19 last week, the largest margin of any game. McGregor ran for 168 yards during the win.
