Basketball Recap: Elgin Falls Despite Big Games from Sabra Baker and Trinity Martinez

It was a proper cat-fight when Elgin took on Pflugerville Connally on Friday. The match between the Elgin Wildcats and the Pflugerville Connally Cougars didn't end well, with the Elgin Wildcats falling 55-41. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Elgin's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Trinity Martinez, who posted 18 points, and Sabra Baker, who earned eight points and 18 rebounds. That's the most rebounds Baker has posted since back in January of 2024.

Even though they lost, Elgin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Pflugerville Connally got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Aniya Toney out in front who went 7 of 16 on her way to 20 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Toney is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Hannah Howie, who put up 22 points and three steals.

Elgin's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 6-21. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to assists: they averaged an imposing 5.69 assists in those games compared to only 5.69 in the others. As for Pflugerville Connally, their victory ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 1-20.

Elgin didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 57-20 loss against East View on the 7th. As for Pflugerville Connally, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, an 81-49 defeat against Hendrickson on the 7th.
