Basketball Recap: Newcomb Takes a Loss

Newcomb lost against Zuni back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Newcomb Skyhawks were beaten by the Zuni Thunderbirds 63-34. The Skyhawks were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-13.

Loss or not, Newcomb got some senior leadership from Savier Thomas and Kinjii Natonabah. Thomas almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds, while Natonabah posted 13 points. Those nine boards gave Thomas a new career-high.

Deron Lastyano continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Zuni, almost dropping a triple-double on 12 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Lastyano has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last nine times he's played. Another player making a difference was Ty'Shawn Nieto, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards.

Newcomb has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season. As for Zuni, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-8 record.

Newcomb didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 72-39 defeat against Navajo Prep on the 31st. As for Zuni, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 73-43 loss against Tohatchi on the 31st.
