Softball Recap: Independence Victorious

Independence hadn't done well against Mt. Pleasant recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The 76ers came out on top against the Cardinals by a score of 12-7. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 26-7 back in April.

Skylar Crowell and Julieta Ramirez made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Crowell pitched three innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Ramirez struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Crowell went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run, while Ramirez went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Joscelyn Santa Cruz, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Arrie Aguilar, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Independence's victory bumped their record up to 12-4. As for Mt. Pleasant, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Independence will take on Hill at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mt. Pleasant, they will challenge San Jose at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cardinals will need to watch out since the Bulldogs have now posted at least ten runs in their last three matches.
