Riverside-Durham hasn't had much luck against Northern Durham recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Pirates will head out on the road to face off against the Knights at 6:00 p.m. Riverside-Durham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.9 runs per game this season.
Riverside-Durham couldn't beat East Chapel Hill on Tuesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the fifth inning. The Pirates fell just short of the Wildcats by a score of 9-8.
Juleah Somers spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered nine runs (all of which were unearned) on ten hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Grayson Knotts and Paris Chavis stepped up to the plate in a big way. Knotts went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Chavis went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs.
Jordan hit Northern Durham with a 11-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Knights lost 16-7 to the Falcons.
AnnaClaire Spell was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Roxy Nelson, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Riverside-Durham's loss dropped their record down to 11-5. As for Northern Durham, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-14.
Northern Durham's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Riverside-Durham has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Northern Durham, though, as they've been averaging 9.9 hits. Given Riverside-Durham's sizable advantage in that area, the Knights will need to find a way to close that gap.
Riverside-Durham took their victory against Northern Durham when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
