The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats honored the memory of their late coach by beating a bigger and ranked opponent.
The Class 2A Wildcats, ranked No. 2 in the Seattle Times poll, beat Class 3A Eastside Catholic, ranked eighth, 26-23 exactly a year after Terry Ennis died after a long fight with prostate cancer.
"This had a lot to do with Coach Ennis," Kelso Wilkins told the Times. "He had a lot to do with our lives. Rest in peace, Coach Ennis. We love you."
Around the state, officials used blue penalty flags to raise prostate cancer awareness in Ennis’ honor. Three hundred coaches around the state wore lapel pins to honor Ennis.
The game was played in a stadium named after him.
Wilkins scored a 26-yard touchdown run on the Wildcats’ first play.
Football: Bellevue Beats Bothell in Showdown
The Bothell Cougars – Class 4A state runner-up each of the last two years – and the Bellevue Wolverines, winners of five Class 3A state titles in the last seven years, had not met since 1990.
The Wolverines used a fake punt on the first drive to take a 3-0 lead and never trailed in a 38-19 win.
Bothell turned the ball over the first two times it had the ball and went three-and-out the next time and quickly trailed 24-0.
Basketball: Kentwood’s Moore Headed to Nebraska
Lindsey Moore a 5-foot-10 senior guard from Kentwood, committed to Nebraska during her official visit.
She chose the Cornhuskers over Washington, Iowa State and Boise State.
"They've been my front-runners all along. On my visit, I didn't see anything that was going to change. They were my No. 1 school since last fall. I just wanted to make it official,” Moore told the Seattle Times.
Moore is a four-year starter who averaged 17.8 points and 7.9 assists.
Volleyball: East Valley Scores Upset, Title
East Valley of Spokane won the championship match of the Puget Sound Adidas Invitational at Auburn Mountainview.
The Knights upset the host team 25-18, 25-19. Mountainview was the top-ranked team in the 3A classification according to the state coaches association preseason poll.
"They showed our weak areas," the Lions’ Megan McBride, who is Oregon State-bound, told the Seattle Times "We want to thank them for that, because now we know what to work on."
The tournament features 24 teams from around the state, and 15 qualified for state the previous year while eight were ranked in preseason polls.
Football: Federal Way’s Pulu a Husky
Federal Way linebacker Andru Pulu committed to Washington after he was offered a scholarship when he visited the campus during a recent loss to BYU.
The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder was a preseason All-State pick.
"I've been interested in U-Dub so I could stay close to home," Pulu told the Seattle Times. "It felt right. I was really excited and happy, and so was my father."
Pulu had offers from Washington State, Eastern Washington and UNLV.
