5A Region 3 recap September 4, 2013
West Jones was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to first in 5A Region 3. The Mustangs beat Northeast Jones 27-0 earlier in the week.
Laurel was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Hattiesburg. The Golden Tornadoes came in at 24 in the state poll after placing at number 41 last week.
Laurel's dynamic duo of Keon Howard and Omar Bayless proved tough for the Tigers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Howard threw for 164 yards and Bayless had 153 yards receiving. Taurus Barnes helped Laurel's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 30 yards.
Todd Breland's team's dynamic duo of Howard and Bayless proved to be unstoppable against Hattiesburg, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Howard put up the best numbers through the air as the Golden Tornadoes bested Tony Vance's team.
Curry Goodwin was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 144 yards on 12 carries as Pearl River Central defeated the Tigers. Bryson Penton also contributed to the rushing game with 105 yards on the ground.
Fred Trevillion was a passing and rushing force as Brookhaven defeated Lawrence County. He completed 7 passes for 161 yards and also ran for 47 yards. Trevillion's favorite target this week was Javontae Trevillion, who caught 3 passes for 88 yards.
Bayless was the best wideout in the league this week as the Golden Tornadoes beat Hattiesburg.
Laurel's Howard and Bayless have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region 3 in both passing and receiving yards. Howard has thrown for 428 yards this season, while Bayless, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 10 catches for 252 yards. Teviaunte McDaniel from the Panthers leads the league in rushing with 163 yards.
Natchez took down Jefferson County 49-8 last week, the largest margin of any game.
