Carolina Crisp made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Southside let Lily McLean and Dana Ransom run wild. McLean scored three runs and stole five bases while going 2-for-4, while Ransom scored three runs while going 2-for-4. McLean has been hot, having posted two or more stolen bases the last eight times she's played. Another player making a difference was Emily Mondragon, who scored three runs while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, John Paul II Catholic entered their tilt with Wayne Christian on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They walked away with a 9-5 win over the Eagles.
Logan Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, Lorelei Grabill and Alana Albritton did most of the damage at the plate: Grabill scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Albritton scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Natalie Velleman was another key player, scoring a run while going 4-for-4.
John Paul II Catholic's record now sits at 7-5. As for Southside, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Southside beat John Paul II Catholic 15-10 when the teams last played back in February of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Southside since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
