The Monterey Dores will square off against the Chico Panthers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Monterey is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Monterey made easy work of Monte Vista Christian and carried off a 13-3 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Dores.
Brooklyn Yamashita spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Monterey got a massive performance out of Denae Lee, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Anaiyah Brown was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base.
Monterey always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Chico never let their opponents score on Friday. They came out on top against Pacific Grove by a score of 5-0.
The result came thanks to McKena Harvey's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 12 Ks. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 6.2 strikeouts per game.
On the hitting side, Leah Cawthon was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two doubles, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Hines, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Chico's win bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Monterey, their victory bumped their record up to 5-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Monterey hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Chico struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Monterey skirted past Chico 2-1 in their previous matchup back in April of 2025. Will the Dores repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
