The Brewer Bears waltzed into their matchup on Friday with five straight wins but they left with six. They had just enough and edged Saginaw out 41-38. This was payback for Brewer, who suffered a 35-31 loss the last time these two teams met.
Brewer had a senior duo take command as Julian Perez scored 21 points along with four steals and Tyren Mitchell scored 12 points along with six steals and two blocks. Perez hasn't dropped below 16 points for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Tre King, who scored five points.
Several Rough Riders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Julius Brundage, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and three blocks. Another player making a difference was Cameron Thomas, who scored six points along with three blocks.
Brewer's win was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 24-5. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.6 points per game. As for Saginaw, their loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 22-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Brewer will face off against the Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Aledo will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 278th, while the Bears are ranked 59th). As for Saginaw, they will head out on the road to square off against the Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
