Canyon Lake's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jace Wheeler led the charge by throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.7 yards per attempt. Wheeler is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in each of the last three games he's played. Kobe Halverson was in the mix too, providing Canyon Lake with one score.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Canyon Lake's defense and their three sacks. In that department, Joseph Matos Padilla was the leader with two. Canyon Lake received some extra help from Halverson, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Meanwhile, Somerset got the win against Uvalde on Friday by a conclusive 43-22. The Bulldogs haven't had any issues with the Coyotes/Lobos (for girls) recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Somerset's win came from a few key players Canyon Lake will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Malakai Iverson, who picked up 126 receiving yards and three TDs. He showed off some serious burst, lighting up the secondary with a catch for 54 yards. Another player making a difference was Kaleb Flores, who threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns while completing 76.5% of his passes.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Somerset proved: they limited Uvalde to a paltry 2.4 yards per carry. The Bulldogs didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 5.6.
Canyon Lake's record is now 5-1. As for Somerset, their record now sits at 4-1.
