Da'Quan Davis blocked an extra point in the final minute helping
Calvert Hall (Baltimore) pull out a wild 28-27 win over
Red Lion Christian Academy (Bear, Del.) in a battle of East Coast powers.
Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Red Lion thought it had tied it up on a 2-yard run by
Wendell Smallwood. But Davis timed his jump perfectly.
“I knew we needed a big play,” Davis told the Baltimore Sun. “It came down to one play and we made it.”
A 35-yard run by
C.J. Williams helped Calvert Hall (3-0) run out the clock.
Tom Stuart fired three touchdown passes for the winners, coming off a big 18-0 win over DeMatha.
Highly touted freshman quarterback and USC-bound
David Sills fired two touchdown passes and was intercepted twice for Red Lion. The first one was returned 10 yards for a touchdown by
Will Johnson.
Red Lion took back the lead 7-6 when Sills connected on a 7-yard pass to
Daikiel Shorts. That would be the only lead for Red Lion.
Stuart completed TD passes of 7, 34 and 15 yards to
Stephen Kelly,
Trevor Williams and
Kyle Levere, the latter breaking a 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter.
