Basketball Recap: Brenham Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Antyianna Lang and Janiyah Mathis

Brenham was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. The game between them and the Montgomery Bears didn't end well, with the Brenham Cubs falling 53-38. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cubs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 50-27 back in December of 2024.

Janiyah Mathis and Antyianna Lang certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Mathis went 7 of 16 en route to 20 points, while Lang went 5 for 7 on her way to 10 points. Those 20 points gave Mathis a new career-high.

Montgomery's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Briley Esnard led the charge by going 6 of 15 en route to 19 points and six steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Janessa Tennison, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 boards.

Brenham's record is now 11-17. As for Montgomery, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 21-9.

Coincidentally, both will both be playing Huntsville the next time they take the court. Brenham will host Huntsville at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, while Montgomery will head out to face them at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
