1A Conference 1 recap November 19, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 1A Conference 1 this week, Swain County beat East Wilkes 56-31. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Hayesville scaled the state rankings by moving to 280 from 307 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Yellowjackets were able to move up by defeating Robbinsville 20-17.
Swain County's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ray Smith threw for 203 and 2 touchdowns and Kobe Toineeta had 76 yards receiving. On the ground Blake Wright contributed 150 yards. Jordan Cody helped Swain County's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 55 yards.
He went 8-11 with 0 interceptions.
Wright was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 150 yards on 17 carries as Neil Blankenship's team defeated the Cardinals. Brody Sitton also contributed to the rushing game with 49 yards on the ground.
Swain County's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Maroon Devils feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1,559 yards and 21 touchdowns this season, while Cody has 34 catches for 607 yards.
Kenton Braswell of the Murphy is only 58 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 85 carries Braswell has put up 942 yards this year.
A big matchup in 1A Conference 1 this week will be when Hayesville takes on Andrews. Ernie Hughes' team is currently in fifth, while the Wildcats are in fourth.
The Yellowjackets and the Black Knights played the closest game in the league this week, with the Yellowjackets eventually emerging with a 20-17 victory. Payton Long ran for 65 yards in the win.
