The St. Joseph Cadets will look to defend their home field on Saturday against the Greenwich Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
St. Joseph's and Ridgefield's game on Friday was close at halftime, but St. Joseph turned on the heat in the second half with 21 points. St. Joseph was the clear victor by a 30-7 margin over Ridgefield. The win was just what St. Joseph needed coming off of a 45-7 loss in their prior matchup.
St. Joseph found their leader in underclassman Tristan Spain, who rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Covino made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Ridgefield to a paltry 190 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to St. Joseph's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out three times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Christian Rivera and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, Greenwich put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They claimed a resounding 42-0 victory over Trumbull on the road. Given Greenwich's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked fifth, while Trumbull is ranked 42nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
George Vomvolakis was a one-man wrecking crew for Greenwich as he rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries. Vomvolakis was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 57 yards. Another player making a difference was Brandon Auguste, who picked up 53 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
St. Joseph's win bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Greenwich, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 6-0.
St. Joseph came up short against Greenwich in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 36-26. Thankfully for St. Joseph, Jack Wilson (who rushed for 83 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries, and also threw for 242 yards and a touchdown while picking up 10.5 yards per attempt) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
