After a string of four wins, the Monte Vista Christian Mustangs's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell just short of North Salinas by a score of 63-61. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Monte Vista Christian's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Angel Martinez, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Martinez has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. Jack Ryan was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Even though they lost, Monte Vista Christian were working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as North Salinas only racked up nine assists.
Jaiden Gomez was nothing short of spectacular for North Salinas: he scored 17 points. Gomez continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was David Jauregui, who scored 11 points.
Monte Vista Christian's loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-5. As for North Salinas, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-13.
Monte Vista Christian will head out on the road to face off against Rancho San Juan at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Averaging 63.48 points so far this season, Monte Vista Christian's high-powered offense has been in full-swing lately, so Rancho San Juan better be ready for a challenge. As for North Salinas, they will head out on the road to challenge Gonzales at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. North Salinas has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
